About Us

When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you perform better. This principle has guided Skirt Sports since the beginning back in 2003, when our founder Nicole DeBoom was on a training run and decided that women shouldn’t have to sacrifice femininity for performance.

We continue to focus on the trifecta – performance, excellent fit and style. We pride ourselves on making products that fit real women’s bodies. In order to do this properly, we have created a comprehensive fit-testing and wear-testing program that includes women of all shapes and sizes from our community. Many companies “wear-test” by walking around the office for a day. That doesn’t fly at Skirt Sports! You can rest assured that our products have hit the pavement (and the trails!).

Nicole rolled up her sleeves to create the world’s first-ever women’s fitness skirt, turning heads as she raced to victory in the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin in her hand-sewn prototype. That win was bigger than just a race, though. Nicole had pioneered an entirely new product category, and Skirt Sports was on its way.

Since those early years, Nicole’s leadership has grown Skirt Sports into one of the leading women’s fitness apparel brands with a full collection of styles, from the market’s first running skirts and dresses to performance tops, bottoms, outerwear, and accessories sold in more than 500 specialty retail stores throughout the U.S., Canada and Australia.

In 2007, an Aussie by the name of Narelle Ash, visiting the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City, USA, stumbled across a cool 5km Fun Run, organised by Skirt Sports, called the SkirtChaser Run. Donning the supplied Skirt Sports Marathon Girl Running Skirt for the 5km, she was instantly sold. The concept of running in a skirt just worked! With a spring in her step, and a vision in her mind, she set about bringing the Skirt Sports brand Down Under. Almost 16 years on, and Skirt Sports Australia is still going strong. Narelle and the Team, can often be found popping up at the many Marathon and Running Event Expo’s around Australia.

The goal was simple – to create a line of cute, flattering, high-performance running apparel.

How did we start? One cold afternoon in December of 2003, in the small Rocky Mountain foothill town of Lyons, Colorado, professional triathlete Nicole DeBoom was on a training run. As she ran down Main St. her reflection in a storefront caught her eye – for all the wrong reasons…

“I literally stopped dead in my run and thought 1) I look like a boy, 2) I’m uninspired, 3) I just want to feel pretty. I immediately ran home, scribbled the word pretty on a piece of paper and started dreaming up ways to start a clothing company,” said Nicole. Her goal was simple – to create a line of cute, flattering, high-performance running apparel. She believed that you truly could have it all – performance, great fit, and style – but no brand had been able to capture the trifecta.

On September 12, 2004, after swimming 2.4 miles, and cycling 112 miles, Nicole started the final leg of Ironman Wisconsin – a full marathon – in 3rd place, wearing a high-performance, lightweight, race-belt skirt – her own prototype design. Over the course of those 26.2 miles she proved that women can have it all -passing her competitors one by one and winning her first Ironman – in the prototype skirt that would later launch the Skirt Revolution.

She incorporated Skirt Sports three days later – and off to the races it truly was! The first generation of running skirts created a fast and furious skirt craze, one that emboldened Skirt Sports to expand beyond that signature item and become the brand we are today – a community of women who support and inspire each other in our pursuit of happiness through the transformative power of running and fitness.

Today, Skirt Sports is the only women’s activewear brand that truly celebrates today’s real woman. We make products that range from XS to 3XL (sizes zero to 22). We offer events that help women walk their first 5k, run a tough 13.1, learn about nutrition and proper form, or just hang out, shop and drink wine! We don’t work with professional models – all of our marketing is based around our friends, ambassadors and customers – of all shapes, sizes, ages, ethnic backgrounds, athletic abilities, and more. We accept everyone with open arms on our quest for a happy, healthy life. We hope you’ll share your journey with us too!
